Palazzo Soranzo Van Axel is a Gothic palace built in 1473 on the southernmost tip of the Cannaregio quarter in Venice. With 3.500 m2 over four floors, the period-listed building was constructed by the Venetian Soranzo family. The experience of entering the palazzo is close to walking into a glorious faraway past; an atmosphere which is evoked by the golden light, precious materials and a richness of details such as Byzantine decoration and bas-reliefs. In the second courtyard, the original well of the Soranzo family with their coat of arms can still be admired, as is true for some of the polychrome frescoes. There is a second coat of arms installed above the Fondamenta entrance, which looks much different and belongs to the family Van Axel, wealthy Flemish textile merchants who made the palazzo their residence in the 17th Century. Closed to the public until 2017, the palace has been restored with special attention to historical integrity over the duration of seven years.
